Makita Completes World's Heaviest Stone Sculpture

11 May 2007
Makita (UK) Ltd power tools have been used by sculptor Peter Randall-Page to complete a giant 80 tonne granite marvel, “massive symbolic seed”, at the heart of the new education centre at the popular Eden Project in Cornwall.

Starting as a 150 tonne block of Cornish granite two years ago, Peter Randall-Page and his team have cut, shaped and polished the rock into a beautiful seed kernel standing over 4 metres high and 3 metres wide.

“We have used Makita hammer drills, blades, core cutters, angle grinders and stone polishers on this sculpture and the performance and reliability has meant that we have kept right on schedule throughout.” says Peter Randall-Page.

The finished seed will be moved the 15 miles to the Eden Project in time for a formal unveiling on June 21st, the day of the summer solstice. Tim Smit, chief executive of the Eden Project, said he had commissioned Randall-Page because “he wanted the sculpture and the new building to make statements and symbolise what Eden is about”.
