'Knot' a Problem with Makita!

01 June 2006
Managing a ball of garden twine seems to require at least two hands and you need another two to hold the plant and fix the string tie-back.

Now the innovative Makita designers have turned their attention from their premium power tools and outdoor power equipment to this ‘simple’ task.

A new design of belt pouch holds a large ball of garden twine in such a way that it rolls out without undoing the whole roll. The twine is controlled through a series of metal eyeholes across a fixed replaceable blade. The gardener draws out the required amount of twine, cuts it off to length by simply pulling it against the blade and gets on with tying-in the plant. This enables the gardener to hold the plant to the support with one hand and manage the twine with the other, using both to tie the knot. The end of the roll is ready to be pulled out and cut for the next plant avoiding the problem of having to bend down and pick up the ball of twine and the separate cutting tool.

Whilst the useful pouch would greatly improve efficiency in a commercial growing situation, it also reduces the effort for the domestic gardener.
